Today for #WCW we are celebrating CFMZ Athlete Kyla Shoemaker. Kyla is an English Teacher at Key West High School and Yoga Instructor, specializing in Paddle Yoga which she teaches at locally at Lazy Dog. Kyla moved to Key West 3 and 1/2 years ago from Charlotte, mainly because she is part mermaid. She loves the ocean and spends as much time as she can in or around the water. Last week she even competed in the 12 mile Paddle Classic race around Key West, finishing in 3 hours and 54 minutes in brutal conditions. She is more than a teacher, mermaid, and competitor though, she is also involved in the Florida Keys community and volunteered an exceptional amount of time working with Team Rubicon and Vineyard Community Church during Hurricane Irma relief efforts. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Kyla has been doing CrossFit with us for about 15 months. She first tried CrossFit when she helped us organize a program for teachers and faculty at KWHS and was invited to try out some of our regular classes. Around that same time Kyla had the opportunity to go see a family member compete at WODAPALOOZA up in Miami. A natural competitor herself, after experiencing some CrossFit workouts and then seeing some of the best in the sport compete in Miami she knew it was something she wanted to do. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• When asked if she felt CrossFit had an impact on her everyday life she said this:

Not only have I gotten stronger, faster, and have better endurance (which is all needed to race paddle boards and do workouts), I have found family at CFMZ. My closest friends have come from the CFMZ community. I also get pushed to my limits (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually) in workouts (and I’m not always happy about that, haha) but it has taught me how to get through daily life challenges." ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Kyla's Favorite thing about CrossFit - Deadlifts and Community. Least favorite - Running and Wall Ball Shots. @crossfitmilezerokeywest @lazydogkeywest @crossfit #PowerfulWomen #StrongCommunity #ForgingEliteCommunity #CFMZ #CFMileZero #KeyWest #KeyWestFlorida
